I think that what you have to do is to make the object with the color '0'
(black) and use a grid texture with the color of the smoke (white, I guess :)
). To make the top of the stema to slowly disapear, in the Grid texture press
the 'Texture falloff' button (I really don't remember the name now!) and put
80% in it in the 'Y' axes (I think). This should make your smoke to vanish in
the top.
